BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Former WKU standout basketball player Sergio Kerusch has signed a three-year contract to play professionally for Aris Thessaloniki in Greece.
Since his father is German, Kerusch will count as a European player for the purpose of roster requirements limiting the number of foreigners allowed on overseas teams.
Aris Thessaloniki has proven itself to be one of the most successful Greek basketball team since its founding in 1922. The club has won 10 Greek championships, eight Greek Cups and three European titles. In 2010-11, Aris Thessaloniki finished fourth in the Greek A1 League.
Kerusch played three years at WKU after transferring from Itawamba Community College, and he averaged 13.5 points per game for his career after raising his scoring average each season en route to its pinnacle at 15.6 points per game in 2010-11. His 1,164 career points put him 29th all-time at WKU, and he also won a conference championship and an NCAA Tournament game while suiting up for the Hilltoppers.
He led the 2010-11 Hilltoppers with a 15.6 point-per game scoring average and was WKU's top scorer in 13 games. On 11 occasions he scored over 20 points in a game, headlined by a 31-point showing in the season's first game at Saint Joseph's.
Updates on Former Hilltoppers: A.J. Slaughter (2007-10) will play for Dexia Mons-Hainaut in Belgium's top-level league in 2011-12... Slaughter averaged 10.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game last season for Angelico Biella in Italy's premier league... Boris Siakam (2005-08) is in the middle of competition as a part of a United States All-Star team that is playing in the Continental Club Basketball Championships in Beijing, China... Siakam is playing alongside NBA stars Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics and Michael Beasley of the Minnesota Timberwolves... Japeth Aguilar (2009) is competing as a member of the Philippines National Team this summer.
