Bowling Green, Ky. - Week one of spring practice is in the books for the Western Kentucky University football team as the Hilltoppers faced live hitting for the first time Saturday afternoon.
"It was good to get our guys out there flying around and hitting each other," said head coach Willie Taggart. "We always talking about separating the men from the boys, and today was one of those days when your out there taking live bullets and we really see who is ready to play."
Overall, Taggart was pleased with the first four workouts of the spring, despite having to work around mother nature and rain showers a couple times during the week.
"We're right on schedule. Things are going exactly the way we wanted them to through the first week," said the second-year head coach. "I think our football team is getting better every day. We've got something special going on here, but we have to keep it going. Our offense has to be more consistent executing plays, but if our defense keeps playing like they are playing now, we're going to have a heckuva ball club."
WKU will get back to work on Monday, going through another evening practice at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.
Spring practice will culminate with the annual spring game at 5 p.m. (CDT) on Saturday April 16. The Hilltoppers open the 2011 season on Thursday, Sept. 1, when they take on Kentucky at L.P. Field in Nashville. The upcoming season will also include six home game at Houchens-Smith Stadium. Season tickets information is available by calling 1-800-5 BIG RED.
