BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Despite falling to Belmont on Saturday, the WKU women's tennis team rebounded in the final two matches of the weekend, taking down visiting Kentucky Wesleyan and Cumberland University.
With the pair of wins, the Lady Toppers move to 6-4 on the year, after losing four out of their last five matches entering the match against Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday.
WKU played host to Belmont and Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday, as all three schools faced each other at least once, with Belmont winning both of its matches.
The Lady Bruins took two of the three doubles from WKU in the opening match, earning the doubles point and eventually earning the win, 5-2.
Freshman Monte Reinfelde and senior Carrie True were the only Lady Toppers to notch wins against Belmont, with Reinfelde taking down Fabiana Mersan in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, and True winning over Laura Stack, 7-6, 6-2.
For the weekend, Reinfelde and True each finished 3-0 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles play. Reinfelde, playing all matches from the No. 1 spot, improves to a team-best 8-1 in singles for the year, and has now won five-straight.
For True, her singles run is equally as impressive, as the senior improved to 7-1 over the weekend in singles, and has won three in a row.
True and Reinfelde led the charge in Saturday's finale against Kentucky Wesleyan, helping WKU to a 4-2 win, after no doubles were played. The Lady Toppers took four of the six singles, with wins from Katrina Vucina, McKinley Mason, True, and Reinfelde.
WKU carried the momentum into Sunday, routing Cumberland University 6-1 to conclude a 2-1 weekend. Five Lady Toppers picked up singles wins, with Reinfelde taking down Akari Miura at the top spot, 6-1, 6-1. Fellow freshman McKinley Mason defeated Courtney Schaub, 6-3, 6-2, while Alex Crofford and Morgan Freeman, also a pair of freshmen, picked up wins in straight sets.
WKU also took two of the three doubles, earning the doubles point for the match. The team of True and Crofford improved to 4-3 on the year as a duo, defeating Anita Raca and Amber Johnson, 8-6. Megan Stephens and Morgan Freeman, paired together for the first time all year, also picked up a doubles win, cruising past Bezerra and Gaither of Cumberland, 8-1.
The Lady Toppers and the Hilltoppers will head out for their annual Alabama road swing on March 5, playing four matches in five days in the state of Alabama.
