BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Western Kentucky University junior outside hitter Jordyn Skinner has been recognized by the Sun Belt Conference as the Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
The honor is the fifth of the season for a Lady Topper and the second of her career for Skinner. WKU picked up a pair of road wins against South Alabama and Troy over the weekend, extending their league winning streak to 10 matches.
Skinner tallied a double-double in both matches and finished the weekend with a team-best 26 digs (4.33 per set) as a non-libero. She also led the squad in kills with 22 (3.67 per set). Skinner has recorded 17 double-doubles on the season and is the only player in the league to rank among the top 10 in kills and digs.
On Friday against South Alabama, Skinner tallied 11 kills and 12 digs with a .357 hitting percentage. Against the Trojans, she again led the team with 11 kills along with 14 digs. She committed only one receiving error and added three block assists on the weekend while leading the team with five service aces.
On the season, Skinner is fourth in the Sun Belt with an average of 3.81 kills per set and ranks ninth in the league with 3.48 digs per set, first among non-liberos.
WKU (27-3, 14-1) returns to action Friday night when it travels to Alumni Memorial Gym in Murfreesboro, Tenn., at 7 p.m. Friday in a match that will decide the East Division championship, the regular-season Sun Belt title and the top seed in the conference tournament. The Lady Toppers only SBC loss of the season came against the Blue Raiders on Oct. 4 in Bowling Green.
