"I'm really proud of our team, our kids came out and played really hard at the beginning of the game and put Evansville under a lot of pressure", head coach Jason Neidell stated. "A lot of things we have been working on in practice, were translated into the game today, which was really good to see those improvements."
The match marked the fourth time in WKU history the two teams have met in competition with the Lady Toppers adding one more to the record at 4-1.
The Lady Toppers took control and dominated the match from the beginning with a shot on goal in the first minute of play by Mallory Outerbridge. WKU controlled the match as they earned their second goal of the season in the 31st minutes of the match. The goal passed in on a corner kick from Outerbridge to the right side of the goal where freshman Chrissy Tchoula drilled it in past the Evansville goalkeeper. The goal marked Tchoula's first goal of the season.
WKU had nine corner kicks in the first period with 13 shots, holding Evansville to zero shots and zero corner kicks in the first period.
The Lady Toppers did not back down in the second period as they clinched the win with three goals in the remaining 45 minutes of play. WKU's second goal came in at 61:16 as Laura Ray dribbled it down the middle passing it off to Sydney Sisler who found Outerbridge open at the corner of the goal as Outerbridge punched it in for her first goal of the season. Sisler and Ray earned their first assists of the season on the goal.
Outerbridge earned her second goal of the season less than 20 minutes later as she took a penalty kick opportunity and drilled it in the right side of the net past Evansville's second goalkeeper of the match. With the third goal for the Lady Toppers in the net, they never backed down as they posted their fourth goal of the match and fifth of the season a quick eight minutes later. The fourth goal put in the net by sophomore Sydney Sisler for her first goal of the season. The assist on the fourth goal was brought in by Outerbridge.
The Lady Toppers outshot the Purple Aces by an astonishing 20-4 ratio. WKU posted 11 shots on goal with 10 corner kick opportunities. Leading the Lady Toppers was Outerbridge, posting a total of six shots with two goals and two assists for a total of six points. The six points puts her tied for third in the WKU single-game points list. The six points is also a career-high in a single match for Outerbridge. Sisler tallied one goal and one assist in the match for three points. Tchoula earned two points on her opening goal and Ray tabbed a point for her assist.
WKU goalkeeper Libby Stout opened the match for the first 16 minutes, facing zero shots. Freshman Katlyn Barnes took over, playing 73 minutes in the match with three saves, earning her first ever victory at goalkeeper for WKU.
Up Next: The 2010 WKU Lady Topper soccer team (1-2-1) will return to the WKU Soccer Complex for their third straight home match next Friday evening against Ball State, match is slated for a 6:00 p.m. start.
