BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University volleyball team returns to action Tuesday night against Tennessee State in Nashville, Tenn. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Kean Hall and will represent the season opener for the Tigers.
WKU (1-2) opened the season over the weekend at the Mortar Board Premier, beginning with a tough loss, 3-0, to host Purdue on Friday. The Lady Toppers finished Saturday with a 3-1 (25-18, 18-25, 25-9, 25-16) victory over Central Michigan after opening the day with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-19) loss to Northern Iowa.
The Lady Toppers had three players with 10 kills each against the Chippewas as WKU recorded its first win of the season. Senior Emily Teegarden led WKU with 13 kills, and Lindsay Williams and Jordyn Skinner each recorded 10. Tiffany Elmore and Williams combined for 11 blocks and a .567 hitting percentage.
As a team against CMU, WKU posted 50 kills, 49 digs, 22 blocks and a .349 hitting percentage. In the third and fourth sets, the team combined for a .576 hitting percentage.
TSU has eight returners from last season, including three seniors and two juniors. Senior Vicmari Prospero and junior Shaquita Williams are among the key returnees for the Tigers.
Prospero led the team with a .220 attack percentage last year while also recording a squad-high 70 blocks. She averaged 2.07 kills per set in 2009 and ranked second in the league with 39 service aces.
Williams led the team with 267 total kills while also ranking first on the squad with 2.50 kills per set. She was second on the team with 47 blocks. She recorded 13 double-digit kill performances.
WKU leads the all-time series between the two teams 18-1, including a 3-0 victory over Tennessee State last season in Bowling Green. The Lady Toppers are 4-0 in Nashville.
