BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The WKU Hilltopper football team finished its final weekday practice of fall camp in helmets, pads and shorts Friday afternoon, working out for two hours on the practice field adjacent to Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.
The team is currently in the middle of preparations for the September 4 season-opener at Nebraska, but head coach Willie Taggart says he wants to be sure the team is focusing on themselves as well.
"We're talking now about being sharp," he said. "We're at the stage where we need to be sharp from here on if we want to have a chance against Nebraska. Everything we do we talk about doing it sharp and doing it right. If we're not, then we're not good enough. We have to continue to do right all the time."
Taggart also said that even though the team is preparing for what Nebraska will throw at them, WKU's main focus is still simple.
"At the end of the day, it's just about winning that one-on-one battle," he said. "We're trying to get our guys to understand what they are going to get. They need to be comfortable out there and not think as much. It's just football."
The 2010 season marks the first for WKU under the direction of Taggart, who was named head coach on November 23. Taggart previously served as running backs coach at Stanford from 2007-09 and helped Toby Gerhart finish second in balloting for the Heisman Trophy and win the Doak Walker award given to the nation's top running back. Taggart worked as an assistant coach at WKU from 1999-2006 and served as co-offensive coordinator for WKU's 2002 I-AA National Championship team. A standout player at quarterback who set 11 school records for the Hilltoppers from 1995-98, Taggart is one of only four players in WKU's 91-year football history to have his jersey retired.
Fall camp will encompass the entire month of August, and will come to a close on Saturday, Aug. 28 with the second annual Family Fun Day from Noon-3 p.m. (CDT) at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium. The 2010 season opens Sept. 4 at #9 Nebraska.
