BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — With the conclusion of the 2010 WKU baseball season at the end of May comes the start of the "second season," as many Hilltoppers have started play in NCAA-sanctioned summer leagues around the country.
Each year, colleges and universities send players to leagues across the nation to develop their skills during the summer months. Players sometimes compete in as many as 68 or 70 games in a summer, and most leagues are wooden-bat leagues.
For example, the Northwoods League, based in Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota and Canada, is the summer home to WKU rising-junior Jared Andreoli and the Green Bay Bullfrogs. Andreoli and the rest of the Northwoods League will play 70 games in 76 days this summer.
Other leagues featuring Hilltopper players include the Coastal Plain League (Kes Carter, Logan Robbins and incoming Hilltoppers Mike Mosby and Ivan Hartle), the Valley League (Blake Crabtree, Ryan Huck and Brian Edelen), the Great Lakes League (Tanner Perkins), the Prospect League (Taylor Haydel), the KIT League (Andrew Zimmerman and Caleb Hanes) and the Western Major Baseball League (incoming Hilltopper Ryan Hutchison).
