Bowling Green, Ky. - With the final week of spring practice for the Western Kentucky University football team now underway, attention and excitement turns towards Saturday's spring game.
A draft was conducted over the weekend to set the rosters for the red and white teams. Defensive coordinator Clint Bowen will be head coach for the red squad, while quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Mike Sanford will lead the white team. As in years past, a postgame steak dinner will be the reward for the winning team, while the losing squad will eat hot dogs.
"It was an interesting draft. There were some surprise picks, and it's getting competative between our players and our coaching staff," said Hilltopper head coach Willie Taggart, who is acting as the 'commissioner' for the spring game. "Now I'm excited to see how our staff gets their squads ready and how they use the guys they picked."
The Hilltoppers were able to get their team work done early in practice on Tuesday morning, allowing the two squad to break up between Jimmy Feix Field and the grass practice field for roughly 45 minutes to begin their planning.
"The guys are excited to get out and compete in front of our fans," said Taggart. "I want out guys to come out here and put on a show, and give our fans something to get excited about and look forward to in the fall. We've put in a lot of hard work this spring, and I'm looking forward to getting out there and ending spring camp on a good note."
The 6 p.m. (CDT) kickoff of the spring game on Saturday will culminate an entire day of activities surrounding the event. Topper Walk will begin at the top of the Hill at 3:40 p.m., and work its way down the Avenue of Champions to Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium. That will be followed by the Alumni vs. Coaches game at 5 p.m. leading up to kickoff.
At halftime, the Touchdown Club will sponsor the Housing and Residence Life and Greek Week Field Goal Contest, while Pepsi will sponsor the DEWmocracy relay race challege in which six lucky fans will have a shot to win free Mountain Dew for a year. The cheerleaders, Topperettes, band and Big Red will also be in attendance.
