Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University senior distance runner Janet Jesang is scheduled to compete in the 3,000m and 5,000m at this weekend's NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship in Fayetteville, Ark. A four-time all-America honoree, she will be looking to add her fifth and sixth national accolades this weekend.
She has earned all-America honors twice in cross country and also in the 5,000 meters last indoor and outdoor seasons. Her first came at the 2008 NCAA Cross Country Championship, where she finished 13th. At the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championship, she placed seventh in the 5,000 meters, and at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championship, she was fifth in the 5,000 meters. Most recently, Jesang earned all-America honors at the 2009 NCAA Cross Country Championship, placing 11th.
Jesang has completely re-written the Lady Topper record book in the distance events, holding WKU standards in the indoor mile, 3,000m, 5,000m, and distance medley relay, as well as outdoor records in the 5,000m and 10,000m. She has earned 20 all-Sun Belt Conference honors in her career, including Top-Point Scorer honors on three occasions, and five Most Outstanding Track Performer honors.
Jesang is one of only six WKU athletes - and the only female - to earn all-America honors in all three track disciplines (cross country, indoor, outdoor), joining WKU Athletic Hall of Fame members Nick Rose, Tony Staynings, Sean Dollman, Larry Cuzzort and Ashley Johnson. Jesang trails only Rose (9), Staynings (8), Dollman (6), and Jesse Stuart (5) in the number of all-America honors achieved while on the Hill.
The 5,000-meter final is scheduled to be contested Friday at 8:20pm (CT), while the 3,000-meter final is slated for Saturday at 8:10pm (CT).
