BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Western Kentucky University freshman Melanie Stutsman added to her list of postseason honors Wednesday, being named an American Volleyball Coaches Association honorable mention All-American.
Stutsman recently was named the South Region Freshman of the Year and by virtue of that honor was a national freshman of the year finalist. The Floyd Knobs, Ind., native was also named to the All-South Region first team.
"We are thrilled that she is being recognized at such a high level in her freshman year," WKU coach Travis Hudson said. "She is a very gifted kid and the future is bright for her. Whenever you have a young setter that you can say that about, it also typically means the future is bright for your entire program because they are such an integral part of building a team and so we are excited for the future."
Stutsman, a second-team All-Sun Belt selection, set her team to a .294 hitting percentage which ranks seventh in the country. She saw action in all 121 sets this season at the setter position. On the season, Stutsman collected 1,289 assists for an average of 10.65 per set. This number ranks third in the conference and 53rd in the nation in assists per sets. She has recorded at least 30 assists in 30 of 36 matches this season. She ranks fifth in the conference with a .338 hitting percentage, a mark that improves to .385 in league play.
Stutsman is the fourth Lady Topper to earn All-America honors, joining Megan Argabright, Caron Blotch and Julie Noe.
