Bowling Green, Ky. - The WKU Lady Toppers shutout Louisiana-Lafayette Sunday afternoon 1-0, at the WKU Soccer Complex. WKU earned their eighth shutout of the season, improving their record to 8-5-2 overall and 6-2 in the Sun Belt Conference. The win is the Lady Toppers third-straight victory and shutout.
The Lady Toppers outshot Louisiana-Lafayette 23-9 with 10 shots on goal. Scoring the game-winning goal was freshman Torrie Lange for her first goal of the season, assisted by Mallory Outerbridge. Junior goalkeeper Libby Stout made five saves in the match earning her seventh shutout of the season.
"I thought we came out really hard and fast-paced today," said head coach Jason Neidell. "It was great to see us score in the first ten minutes of play, which is something we haven't done all season and it ended up being the difference in the match. We are really happy about getting two shutout wins this weekend and having our destiny in our own hands. We are in second place in the conference now and we keep getting better every weekend."
WKU opened the first half strong with two shots in the first two minutes of action. In the 10th-minute of play WKU's Outerbridge had a free kick off a foul from Louisiana-Lafayette. Outerbridge kicked it into traffic in the box, finding Lange for the goal. Lange earned her first goal of the season and Outerbridge tallied her fourth assist of the season. The Lady Toppers had a cornerkick opportunity four minutes later finding Sydney Sisler for a shot on goal saved by Lafayette's goalkeeper.
The Lady Toppers had 14 shots in the first period with five on goal. Stout made two saves in the first period.
WKU tallied three shots in the first six minutes of the second period, with a shot on goal by Laura Ray. Louisiana-Lafayette drilled a tough one on goal with a big save by Stout in the 61st-minute of action. The Ragin' Cajuns battled hard in the second period to try and knot the game with four shots on goal. Louisiana-Lafayette tallied the last five shots of the match in the remaining 17 minutes of play. Stout made huge saves to keep the shutout in 72nd and 73rd-minute of action.
The Lady Toppers finished with 23 shots and five cornerkick opportunities. Sisler tallied four shots with one on goal. Kelsey Meyer also had four shots in the match. Lange earns her first two points of the season with the goal.
WKU goalkeeper Libby Stout improves her record to 7-4-2 with seven shutouts this season and 28 career shutouts.
