Members of the Western Kentucky University football team will help sell season tickets for the 2009 season by going door-to-door in eight Bowling Green neighborhoods on Tuesday, July 28 and Thursday, July 30. Fans will be able to purchase a $30 season ticket good for general admission to all six WKU home games.
Over 100 individuals in the program will be divided into four teams and canvass the following eight neighborhoods from 6 – 8:00 p.m. (CDT) on each day:
Fountain Trace (out Cemetary Rd. past Drakes Creek)
Covington/Edgewood (between the bypass and Covington St.)
Bent Tree (Bent Tree Ave. area)
Creason St. (from WKU to Emmett Ave. and Ogden Park area beside WKU)
Indian Hills (beside Indian Hills Country Club)
Briarwood (between Fairview Ave. and Briarwood Elementary)
Cave Mill Area #1 (behind Greenwood Mall to Nashville Rd.)
Cave Mill Area #2 (other side of Cave Mill Rd. to Nashville Rd., behind Interstate 65 Entrance)
This marks the third consecutive year the football team has gone door-to-door selling season tickets and resulted in more than 300 season tickets being sold last year. Players and coaches from the team that sell the most tickets will be treated to a cookout at Head Coach David Elson’s house and will be excused from early morning breakfast checks for a week.
“This initiative has had a positive impact for our program in many ways,” Elson said. “It is always good when our players and coaches can interact within the community, and we are fortunate to have a very supportive and loyal fan base. We have had a lot of success selling season tickets doing this, and it gives our players a better understanding of the business aspect of sales and marketing. And, any contest among teammates is sure to result in some good natured competition and will help our overall camaraderie.”
Average attendance for all five 2008 home games (16,697) ranked as the second-highest total in school history, and student attendance has increased 80.3 percent from 2006 to 2008.
WKU, the newest of 120 Football Bowl Subdivision Members, is eligible for a post-season bowl berth and the Sun Belt Conference championship in 2009. WKU’s 511-337-30 all-time record in 90 seasons of football equates to a .600 winning percentage, ranking 26th among all 120 Division I Football Bowl Subdivision schools and tops in the Sun Belt Conference. WKU’s 948 APR in football is also higher than all other Sun Belt Conference programs.
