Belgrade, Serbia — After winning his heats in the first three rounds of the 200-meter dash at the 25th Summer Universiade in Belgrade, Serbia, Western Kentucky University senior-to-be Gavin Smellie finished sixth in the finals on Friday as a member of the Canadian squad.
In Friday's semifinal, the Etibicoke, Ontario native clocked a time of 20.67 to win his heat and earn the second seed for the final. In the finals, Smellie finished sixth with a time of 20.84 seconds.
Smellie will be entering his senior season on the Hill in the fall. During the course of his career, he has earned all-America honors as a member of the indoor 4x400-meter relay team in 2008, and most recently at the 2009 outdoor championships in the 200 meters. In his three years in a Hilltopper uniform, Smellie has been named SBC Most Outstanding Performer two times, earned all-Mideast Regional team honors four times, and earned 17 all-SBC laurels.
