BOWLING GREEN, Ky. WKU's Chad Cregar was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week for the first time during the 2009 season after leading the Topper offense which produced 49 runs this past week including 34 in a three-game series sweep of defending SBC regular-season champions, ULM.
The left-handed batter hit .357 with a slugging percentage of 1.071 as he sent four of his five hits for extra bases including three balls that were smashed over the outfield wall at Nick Denes Field. The Oxford, Miss., native drove in 10 RBI and scored four more runs in only four games of action. The everyday right-fielder missed a midweek contest due to injury.
In the opening series of league action for WKU, Cregar pounded two more home runs, seven RBI and three runs scored. On the young season, Cregar is batting .344 with six homers and 19 RBI including a league-leading five home runs and 16 RBI.
The Hilltoppers are leading the SBC standings at 3-0 after the first weekend of conference play. WKU is 9-2 overall on the season heading into two games with Southeastern Conference members, Tennessee and Auburn, this week.
