BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The WKU volleyball team got back on the winning track on Thursday night sweeping ULM (3-23, 0-11 SBC) in Monroe, La (25-12, 25-13, 25-16). With the win, the Lady Toppers improved to 17-7 overall and 6-3 in the Sun Belt Conference.
In set one, WKU got off to a fast start scoring the first two points after a kill by senior Brittany Bowen and an error by the Warhawks. After leading the entire set and up 11-8, the Lady Toppers scored the next four points to extend their lead to 15-8. From there, the Lady Toppers continued to dominate the Warhawks and won the set after racking up 11 kills and just five errors for a .250 hitting percentage.
The Lady Toppers were also efficient in the second set posting another 12 kills and a .280 hitting percentage. In the set, the Lady Toppers scored the first point after a service error by ULM. Then, tied at 1-1, WKU scored the next seven points to extend their lead to seven. From there, the Lady Toppers outscored the Warhawks 17-12 and won the set after a kill by sophomore Lauren Stuckel.
In the final set of the night, the Lady Toppers posted 20 kills and finished with their highest hitting percentage of the night, a .289 hitting percentage. After allowing ULM to stay close through much of the set, the Lady Toppers pulled away at the end securing the match victory after a kill by senior Abbie Siljendahl.
In the match, WKU recorded 43 kills and a .276 hitting percentage. The Lady Toppers also added 39 assists, eight aces, 41 digs and five blocks. WKU was led by Stuckel who finished the night with seven kills and a .545 hitting percentage. Sophomore Tiffany Elmore also had a good night finishing with five kills and zero errors for a .714 hitting percentage. She also led the team in assists with 28 while freshman Sarah Rogers led the team in digs with 10. In blocks, Bowen recorded two to lead the team. WKU will continue action on Saturday when they face New Orleans at 5 p.m. CDT.
