BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, head coach Travis Hudson and the WKU volleyball team have designated their match against Troy on October 30 as Breast Cancer Awareness Night. During the match, fans will be able to pledge money for each dig that the Lady Toppers record during the night with all proceeds benefiting cancer research. “All across the country, volleyball programs are participating in a program called “Dig for the Cure” where they have a specific night where people can pledge money for every dig that is accumulated in that match,” Hudson said. “We are going to be participating in something similar to this event and will be hosting a night where all of our proceeds will go to cancer research. We will be donating the money that we collect and contributing it to our Kela’s Crew initiative.” Kela’s Crew, now in its fifth season, was named in honor of Dr. Kela Fee. Born and raised in Tompkinsville, Ky., she earned her medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. After completing her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Louisville, Dr. Fee and her husband moved to Bowling Green where she began her practice. She was unexpectedly diagnosed with advanced colorectal cancer in October 2004 and tragically died from her illness on December 12, 2008. All money raised by Kela’s Crew is donated for cancer research. ”Kela’s Crew is a program that we have done for the last several years to raise money for cancer research,” Hudson explained. “All of the money that is raised from that initiative goes to the James Graham Brown research center in Louisville, which is the largest cancer facility in this part of the country. The money that we raise on October 30 will go toward their important research.” In addition to the money that is pledged for each dig, the WKU volleyball team will be hosting various activities throughout the night. The players will wear pink warm-ups and fans will receive pink ribbons at the door. Additionally, the match will be free admission and the Lady Toppers will be accepting donations in place of tickets. “One of the things that all of our players have come to realize is that cancer is something that affects every family,” Hudson said. “Raising money to fight cancer is something that I hold near and dear to my heart. My grandmother had breast cancer and passed away and with my own cancer diagnosis back in March, cancer research is something that our whole program feels strongly about. We want people to understand that this is a fight for their own family. This money may end up being money that helps find a cure for someone in their family down the road. In this community, we all need to embrace one another and help fight this dreaded disease. We are excited to do this from an awareness standpoint and from a fundraising standpoint and we appreciate everyone’s support.” The Lady Toppers and Troy will meet on the court at 7 p.m. CDT on Friday, Oct. 30.
