BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - After sweeping Denver on Friday night, the WKU volleyball team extended their winning streak to six on Saturday defeating North Texas in four sets (25-20, 18-25, 25-17, 25-11). With the win, the Lady Toppers improved to 16-6 this season and 5-2 in the SBC.
In set one, the Lady Toppers jumped up 2-0 after an attack error by North Texas and a kill by junior Emily Teegarden. After allowing North Texas to battle back and take a 9-8 lead, the Lady Toppers regained the lead and went ahead 13-12 after another attack error by North Texas. WKU then went on to win the set after a kill by senior Brittany Bowen. In the set, WKU hit .394 after collecting 17 kills and just four errors in 33 attacks.
WKU struggled in set two committing eight errors and finishing with just a .111 hitting percentage. North Texas took an early lead in the set off an ace by Kayla Saey and WKU could never threaten the Mean Green's lead. In the set, North Texas was nearly perfect recording 12 kills and just two errors and finishing with a .345 hitting percentage.
In set three, it was WKU that got off to a fast start scoring the first point of the set after an ace by sophomore Lauren Stuckel. Tied at two, WKU then went on to score the next five points to extend their lead to five. From there, North Texas was never able to recover and WKU won the set after recording nine kills.
The Lady Toppers finished the match in the fourth set by posting another 15 kills and posting a final hitting percentage of .387. In the set, WKU jumped ahead 1-0 after a kill by sophomore Lindsay Williams. After North Texas tied things up at one, WKU scored the next six points to pull ahead 7-1. From there, WKU outscored the Mean Green 18-10 and secured the match win after a kill by Stuckel.
In the match, the Lady Toppers were led by senior Abbie Siljendahl who finished the night with ten kills and just one error for a .474 hitting percentage. Stuckel finished the match with a team-high 39 assists and freshman Sarah Rogers led the team in digs with 21. Williams also had a great day at the net finishing the match with a team-high six blocks. As a team, the Lady Toppers recorded 53 kills and finished with a .242 hitting percentage while also adding 48 assists, four aces, 54 digs and 20 blocks.
WKU will continue conference play on Tuesday night when they host conference rival Middle Tennessee at 7 p.m. CDT.
