With the score tied 1-1 against the Knights, Brad Magnuson received a pass from Dustin Downey and tallied the match-winning goal with less than three minutes to play.
The Toppers scored in the 14th minute on a Will Thompson shot from 30 yards out to put WKU up 1-0.
In the second match of the day against the Purple Aces, Magnuson and Thompson struck again. Thompson scored the first goal of the match in the 22nd minute. Magnuson then put the game away in the 40th minute off of a pass from Samuel Drummond.
“It was two gutsy performances by the team,” head coach David Holmes said. “The guys have practiced well all month. Yes, we are disappointed about the decision to discontinue our sport. While our opponents are playing to get ready for next season, the Hilltoppers were playing for pride.
However, Coach Sean Helliwell and I are extremely proud of our group, and the way they have handled everything. Pride won out on Saturday.”
This Saturday (March 1) WKU will host Lambuth and Kentucky during the second spring invitational. The Toppers will take on Lambuth at 10 a.m. (CST) and UK at 3 p.m. WKU will recognize the senior class before the match against the Wildcats.
All matches are free to the public.
