Troy, Ala. The WKU volleyball team made it a weekend sweep defeating Troy in three sets (25-21, 25-22, 25-16) to improve to 19-9 this season and 8-5 in the Sun Belt Conference. With the win, the Lady Toppers also extended their win streak to five while also handing Troy its 16th loss of the season.
In the first set, the Lady Toppers and Trojans battled and WKU pulled away midway through the set after fierce competition from Troy. The Trojans battled back to tie the match up at 13 and take as much as a three point lead, but WKU gained momentum late in the set and took the lead off a service ace by junior Abbie Siljendahl to make it 19-18. From there, the Lady Toppers outscored Troy 8-3 to win the set.
Junior Brittany Bowen and senior Megan Argabright both picked up four kills in the set. The Lady Toppers, who finished with their worst hitting percentage of the night at .200, posted 13 kills and six errors.
The Lady Toppers tallied 17 kills in the second set behind the lead of junior Aquila Orr who had five in the set. Argabright and Bowen added four a piece and the Lady Toppers were, once again, able to rebound after falling behind by as many as five points in the set. After trailing almost the entire set, the Lady Toppers tied the set at 22 off an error by Troy. WKU then scored three consecutive points to take a 2-0 lead in the match off a kill by sophomore Emily Teegarden, a kill by Siljendahl and an ace by sophomore Kelly Potts.
The third set, which was the best of the night for the Lady Toppers offensively, ended with WKU posting 15 kills and committing only four errors. After going down 1-0 to start the match, the Lady Toppers held onto a secure lead throughout the majority of the match and Argabright sealed the deal for WKU off a kill from senior Julia Noe.
The Lady Toppers were led by Argabright who finished with 12 kills, a .455 hitting percentage, one ace, one dig and two kills. Orr racked up 11 kills on the night while Noe finished with 36 assists and senior Kelly Hofmeyer finished with 15 digs. Junior Lindsey Gould also played a crucial role during the night finishing with four critical aces.
As a team, WKU posted 45 kills on the night, 41 assists, eight aces, 28 digs and nine blocks while finishing with a .282 hitting percentage. Troy recorded 29 kills, a .133 hitting percentage, one ace, 35 digs and five blocks on the night.
The Lady Toppers will continue their road trip this weekend when they travel to Florida to take on Florida Atlantic on Friday, November 7 and 6 p.m. CDT and Florida International on Sunday, November 9 at noon.
