Bowling Green, Ky. Four members of the Western Kentucky University football senior class Dan Cline, Greg Ryan, Tanner Siewert and Stephen Willis have been named team captains for this Saturday’s 6 p.m. (CDT) kickoff against Florida Atlantic at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.
Cline a native of Centerville, Ohio also served as a captain for the Hilltoppers’ season opener at Indiana. The two-year starter on the defensive line has tallied 12 total tackles through the first seven games, including seven solo stops. He has also been credited for 2.5 tackles for loss and a pass breakup.
With this weeks selection, Ryan has served as a captain in four of WKU’s eight games this season Indiana, Alabama, Murray State and FAU. The Murray, Ky., product has started all eight games on the offensive line, but recently moved from left tackle back to his original position at right guard. Ryan has graded out at 89 percent or better in each of the Toppers’ last seven games.
Siewert stands as WKU’s leading scorer through the first seven games, accounting for 28 points. That includes seven made field goals five of which have been from over 40 yards. He is also 1-for-2 from 50 yards out. A native of Robards, Ky., Siewert is also 7-for-8 on extra-point attempts.
Willis will be serving as a captain for the third time, as he also was in the role at both Indiana and Virginia Tech. A native of Indianapolis, Ind., Willis has seen action at both running back and wide receiver this season. In fact, he is listed to start at one receiver position this weekend. Willis has made the most of his limited receptions this season. He has racked up 46 yards on three catches an average of 15.3 yards per catch. Willis has also rushed six times for 24 yards and a touchdown.
The Hilltoppers (2-5) begin a run of five straight games against Sun Belt Conference members this week. The Owls (1-5, 0-2 SBC) are the defending SBC and New Orleans Bowl champions.
