“It was a very encouraging performance,” head coach David Holmes said. “We played so poorly on Friday and turned it around and played so well today under difficult conditions on the road. We faced a solid Marshall team and put up a good performance, but we are just a little snaked-bitten right now.”
WKU jumped on the board early in the first half as Dustin Downey scored his first goal of the season in the 25th minute.
The Toppers would hold that lead until two minutes to go in the match when JD Hill hit Michael Bolt for a goal at 87:57 to tie the match 1-1.
Marshall would then score the match-winner in the second overtime in the 118th minute after Hill hit Kolby Lacrone for a goal.
The Hilltoppers had chances as they took seven shots in the second half and overtime periods being led by Downey with three shots and Glen Marshall also collected three shots. Downey and Blake Wilson also were named to the all-tournament team after the match.
Osric Flores led The Herd attack posting six shots and Avneet Shergill added five shots. Craig Ratanamorn saved five Hilltopper shots in the 118 minutes of action.
WKU will return to the WKU Soccer Complex on Friday to face Kentucky with a 7:30 p.m. (CDT) start time.
