WKU Cheerleading Competes in 2013 National Competition
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The Western Kentucky University all-girl and coed cheerleading squads both placed inside the Top 10 at this weekend's UCA College Cheerleading National Championships, hosted at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla.
The competition is considered the most prestigious cheerleading championship in the country.
WKU placed eighth in the all-girl Division IA field after hitting a perfect routine in the semi-final round. The finish was higher than the likes of Mississippi State, Memphis and Temple. WKU was one of two non- automatic qualifying BCS programs to finish in the top eight, joining San Diego State who placed fifth.
The coed Hilltopper cheerleaders were one of 13 teams in the nation to advance to the final round, where they posted a ninth-place finish. WKU was one of four non-automatic qualifying BCS programs to advance to finals and beat out Tennessee, Mississippi State, Cincinnati, Florida State, Michigan State and Oklahoma.
The WKU all-girl squad is coached by Tom and Sarah Jones while Josh Bewley heads the coed cheerleaders along with Joni Hall.
"We are so proud of our two WKU Cheerleading squads," said WKU assistant athletic director of marketing Lindsay Boyden. "They represented WKU in a first class manner and both placed in the top ten of their divisions respectively. These young ladies and young men work so hard all year long to compete with the best of the best. A big thank you to them and our great coaching staff for a job well done!"
