In the first of four rounds, Smellie recorded the fastest time in the competition with a 20.81 clocking over 200 meters. A few hours later in round two, he advanced to the semi-finals after clocking the third-fastest second-round perofmance at 21.12. The semi-finals are scheduled to begin at 10:50 a.m. local time. If he places in the top eight in that round, he will run in the finals, scheduled for 7:55 p.m.
Smellie qualified for the 2007 Summer Universiade by placing second in the 200-meter dash at the Canadian Track and Field Championships last month in Windsor, Ontario, where he clocked a time of 20.75 seconds. The Toronto, Ontario native holds the second-fastest times ever recorded by a Hilltopper in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes, and was an NCAA Mideast Regional qualifier in five events this past season — the 100, 200, and 400 meters, as well as the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays.
