He’s the 22nd freshman to commit to the Hilltoppers this year, as WKU’s recruiting class now consists of 24 members. That includes 10 individuals from Kentucky.
“We are very excited to have Tyrell join our family here at WKU,” said Elson. “Tyrell is a model student-athlete that we think will have a lot of success both on and off the field during his career on the Hill.”
Hayden, a 5-foot-10, 200-pound running back from Lexington, Ky., was named honorable mention all-state by the Louisville Courier-Journal, first-team all-district and all-city as well as the district player of the year last fall after ranking among the top 15 in the Commonwealth with 141.6 yards per game and 23 touchdowns in the regular season. His efforts helped Lexington Christian Academy advance to the quarterfinals of the state A playoffs while posting an 11-2 final mark, which included a perfect 6-0 record in district action.
As a junior, Hayden earned all-district and all-city accolades while being selected the team’s most valuable player.
In his career, he finished with over 4,500 yards rushing and 80 touchdowns. LCA advanced to the state playoffs in each of his final three seasons while compiling a 27-8 overall mark — 16-2 in district play — during that span.
Hayden also earned four letters in track, qualifying for the state meet in the 100-meter dash and long jump, and as part of the Eagles’ 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relay teams in the spring. He also participated in the state championships in the 100-meter dash his junior season.
