The duo were eligible for Academic All-America honors after being named first-team Academic All-District IV earlier this month.
Nichols, a distance events runner, won the individual title and outstanding performer honors to lead the Lady Toppers to their second consecutive Sun Belt cross country championship in the fall. The senior from Bowling Green, Ky., won both the 3,000 meters and the mile at the 2005 SBC Indoor Championships to help Western earn a runner-up finish. During her career, the exercise science major won 15 all-Sun Belt awards, six individual titles and qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regional in the 1,500 meters in 2003 and ’04.
Carmack, for the third time in her career, was a member of the winning distance medley relay team at the 2005 SBC Indoor Championships. The senior from Brodhead, Ky. was Western’s top finisher in the 800 meters at the SBC Outdoor Championships, placing fifth. Carmack concentrated on mass communication and religious studies on the Hill.
The two were Western Kentucky’s co-Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year during the 2004-05 academic year.
To be eligible for All-America honors, individuals must be at least a sophomore starter or key reserve with a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade-point average.
