The 5-foot-8, 185-pound Indianapolis, Ind., resident was also the Special Teams Player of the Week following the Hilltoppers’ 2004 regular-season finale, and he named Defensive Player of the Week in November 2003.
Mitchell recorded a pair of punt returns or more than 40 yards that led to WKU touchdowns in the Toppers’ 37-28 Homecoming victory over Missouri State Saturday, as he finished the contest averaging 47.5 yards per runback. He finished with 107 all-purpose yards after adding a 12-yard kick return — he had a long runback nullified by a penalty in the fourth quarter — marking the first time this season that he has finished in triple figures in the category.
On defense, Mitchell was credited with six tackles, including a 7-yard sack, a pass defensed and a forced fumble that he recovered which led to a WKU field goal in the second quarter.
Mitchell is averaging 32.3 yards per punt return this season, but does not qualify for the league or national rankings since he has just five returns in Western’s six games.
The Hilltoppers (5-1, 3-0 Gateway) return to action Saturday with a 4:05 p.m. (CDT) kickoff at Western Illinois.
