Thrower Angie Gardner (So., Clarksville, Tenn.) highlighted the day for the Lady Toppers, breaking her own school weight throw record to win the event with a toss of 50-7.50, becoming the first in school history to break the 50 foot plateau. However, as Gardner upped one record, she lost another, as Courtney Wood (Fr., Owensboro, Ky.) set a new freshman mark at 46-1 to finish third. In only her second collegiate competition, the Apollo High School product has broken two freshman records, as she also set the standard in the shot put last month at 42-0.
Danah Whitley (So., Murfreesboro, Tenn.) picked up the first victory of her college career in the 3,000 meters, setting a new personal best at 11:08.98. Behind Whitley were Lady Toppers Susana Beraun (Sr., Bowling Green, Ky.) and Trisha Gothrup (Fr., Monticello, Ky.), who placed second and third, respectively. In the mile, Nicole Jaggers (Fr., Bowling Green, Ky.) placed second with a time of 5:05.99, while Cara Nichols (Jr., Bowling Green, Ky.) finished two spots back in 5:08.52.
In the sprints, Shanea Wilson (So., Paducah, Ky.) won her preliminary round of the 55 meters in 7.13 seconds, and placed third in the finals in 7.11. Aisling Maunsell (Fr., Cork, Ireland) recorded the third fastest time of the day in the 400 meters in 59.05.
The Hilltoppers went one-two in two field events. In the pole vault, Matt Moore (Sr., Madisonville, Ky.) won with a vault of 13-0, while Jarrett Murphy (Jr., Burkesville, Ky.) was runner-up at 10-6. Raigo Toompuu (Jr., Haapsalu, Estonia) had the top mark in the shot put at 51-3 and Kristo Galeta (So., Viljandi, Estonia) was second with a toss of 48-4. Toompuu also finished second in the weight with a throw of 50-8.50.
Jonathon Brown (Sr., Morgantown, Ky.) won his heat of the 55 meters in 6.39 seconds and took second in the finals in 6.34. Dennis Mitchell (So., Indianapolis, Ind.), a defensive back on the Hilltopper football team, competed in his first track meet since coming to the Hill and won his prelimary heat of the 55 meters in 6.42 seconds, and equaled that time in the finals to place fifth. He also faired well in the 200 meters, recording the second-fastest time of the day and winning his heat in 22.31 seconds.
Western will travel to Kentucky on Friday to compete in the Rod McCravy Memorial.
