Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University junior right-handed pitcher Andy Baldwin (Campbellsville, Ky.) will have a tough decision to make as he was drafted in the 15th round on Tuesday in the 2003 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Detroit Tigers. Baldwin, who has one year of elgibility left, is the first WKU player taken in the draft since Ryan Hutchison was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 17th round of the 2001 draft.
Baldwin recently completed his third season with the Hilltoppers going 6-6 with a 3.97 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 102 innings. He led Western in strikeouts, innings pitched and complete games. His ERA and win totals were second to Matt Wilhite (Sr., Franklin, Ky.). Baldwin through one-hit, complete game, shutout versus Wright State in his second start of the year and was named Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week for his efforts. In his first two seasons on the Hill, Baldwin had a combined 6-3 record with a 4.97 ERA with 78 strikeouts.
Baldwin was the ninth player selected in the draft from the Sun Belt Conference and one of 12 taken in the first 20 rounds. Florida International's Josh Banks was selected in the second round by Toronto with the 50th pick overall.
