Columbus, Ohio -- On an unseasonably cool and windy day at Jesse Owens Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University, Western Kentucky freshman
Kristo Galeta (Viljandi, Estonia) made a huge break through in the NCAA Mideast Regional. Galeta qualified for NCAA Nationals by placing third in the javelin with a school record breaking throw of 222-1, a personal best toss by nearly 11 feet. He finished behind Latrell Frederick of Northwestern State - who broke the stadium record with a winning throw of 261-3 - and Patrick Miller of Indiana, who placed second witha toss of 224-4. Galeta is the first Western trackster to qualify for nationals since
Erik Jenkins, who earned a berth in the long jump in the 1999 NCAA Championships. Jenkins is now in his third season as an assistant coach at Western, training a superb group of sprinters and jumpers.
One of Jenkins proteges, junior sprinter Jonathon Brown (Morganfield, Ky.), placed eighth in the finals of the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.37. Mardy Scales of Sun Belt Conference rival Middle Tennessee State won the event in a blazing time of 10.02.
Galeta will join the best track and field athletes in the nation at the NCAA Championships, June 11-14 in Sacramento, Calif., on the campus of California State University.
