Bowling Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky men's and women's cross country teams hosted the 21st Annual Dr. Mark Allen Old Timers Classic Saturday (Sept. 21) at Kereiakes Park.
No team scoring was kept, but several Western athletes ran quality races on their home course.
The Lady Toppers took the top three spots in a field of 25 women. Olga Cronin (Sr.; Cork, Ireland) took top-honors, completing the 5k course in 17:26.51. Finishing just behind Cronin was Bowling Green sophomore Cara Nichols, who crossed the line just .27 seconds behind the winner. Completing the Western sweep was Bonita Paul (Capetown, South Africa), who finished in 17:33.69, nearly five seconds ahead of the fourth place finisher. Aimee Wellerding (Fr.; Louisville, Ky.) and Cheyenne Carmack (Fr., Broadhead, Ky.) also placed in the top-10, finishing seventh and ninth, respectively. Carmack showed great kick in the last 50 meters to pass Kentucky's Candace Leep for her first collegiate top-ten finish.
Daniel Roberts (So.; Monticello, Ky.) was the top Hilltopper finisher for the second meet in a row, placing eighth collegiately and eleventh overall. Enda Grandfield (Jr.; Kerry, Ireland) was the only other Western male to finish in the top half of the field by placing tenth collegiately, 14th overall.
Representing the WKU men's alumni team at this year's Old Timers Classic were Jef Scott (fifth), Peter Kimaru (sixth), Robert Pritchett (eighth), James Scott (twelfth), Bobby Wells (22nd) and Michael Terry (37th). Lady Topper alumni who competed in the race were Jennifer Hibbs (twelfth) and Terri Hennessy (14th.)
WKU will next compete on Saturday, September 28 at the Spalding Invitational in Louisville, Ky.
