BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University baseball team travels to Jonesboro, Ark., to face Arkansas State in a three-game conference series, beginning Friday at 6 p.m. (CST). The Hilltoppers (15-8, 1-2 Sun Belt) and Indians (9-15, 0-3 Sun Belt) will battle again Saturday at 2 p.m. before concluding the series Sunday in a 1 p.m. start.
The series will be an important one for WKU, who lost two of three games last weekend at Arkansas-Little Rock to open league play. On Friday (March 22), Ryan Bicondoa (Sr., Lovelock, Nev.) turned in his most impressive outing of the year, fanning a career-high 14 batters in a complete-game effort to lead the Toppers to an 8-3 win. Games two and three were a different story though, as the Trojans bounced back to earn an 8-6 triumph Saturday before claiming the series victory with a 7-3 win Sunday.
This weekend will be equally as important for Arkansas State, as the Indians were swept at South Alabama in their conference opener last weekend. ASU lost its fourth-straight contest Wednesday, dropping a 10-3 decision to Southwest Missouri State at home.
The two teams played a three-game set at Nick Denes Field last season, with ASU claiming game one 12-7. The Hilltoppers came back to earn a resounding win in game two, 15-4, before taking the series with an 8-4 triumph in the finale.
Arkansas State leads the all-time series, 19-17.
