Tuscaloosa, Ala. - The Western Kentucky track and field teams competed in the Alabama Relays March 21-24.
Thursday and Friday featured the women's heptathlon and the men's decathlon. Senior Holly Wilder (London, Ky.) finished eighth in the heptathlon, totalling 4262 points. Wilder scored well in the 100-meter hurdles (16.50 / 654 points), high jump (5-3 / 736) and 200-meter dash (27.03 / 709).
In the men's decathlon, Eigo Siimu (Fr., Viljandi, Estonia) and Matt Moore (So., Madisonville, Ky.) each broke the school decathlon record with 6473 and 6193 points, respectively. Siimu scored well in the high jump (6-8.25 / 840 points), pole vault (15-1 / 790), long jump (21-7.50 / 718) and javelin (191-3 / 712). Moore scored well in the pole vault (14-1.25 / 702) and the long jump (21-11 / 739).
Several individuals performed well on Saturday and Sunday. Cork, Ireland junior Olga Cronin placed first in the 3,000-meters (9:58.68) and sixth in the 1,500 (4:39.11). Jill Shannon (Fr., Jordantown, Northern Ireland) finished eighth in the 3,000 (10:17.83), Terri Hennessy (Sr., Cork, Ireland) placed ninth in the 5,000 (18:12.19) and Christy Green (Jr., Naperville, Ill.) pole vaulted 9-0.25, good enough for sixth. The distance medley relay team finished third with a time of 12:06.23.
The men were once again led by sophomore sprinter Jonathon Brown (Morganfield, Ky.). Brown was the top collegiate finisher - third overall - in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.65 and set a new school record in the 200-meter dash, placing second collegiately, with a time of 20.93, just eight hundredths of a second shy of provisionally qualifying for the NCAA championships. David Altmaier (So., Somerset, Ky.) finished second in the 10,000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 31:20.13. Justin Miller (Jr., Campbellsville, Ky.) placed eighth in the 400-meter dash with a personal best time of 48.00. Enda Grandfield (So., Kerry Ireland) finished ninth in the 1,500, clocking in at 3:57.44. Freshman thrower Raigo Toompuu (Haapsalu, Estonia) placed seventh in both the shot put (51-8.25) and discus (156-1).
The Western track and field teams return to action April, 6 at the Louisville Colllegiate 4-way.
