BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - After playing its last 14 games at the friendly confines of Nick Denes Field, the Western Kentucky University baseball team will play seven of its next eight games on the road, beginning with a midweek matchup at Murray State Tuesday. The Hilltoppers (14-6) and Thoroughbreds (6-9) will battle at 2 p.m. at Reagan Field.
Last week, WKU claimed four victories in five games, including a 3-2 win over Eastern Kentucky Tuesday (March 12), followed by a 9-5 triumph over Valparaiso Wednesday. Over the weekend, the Hilltoppers hosted Bowling Green State in a three-game series, winning two, including head coach Joel Murrie's 700th career victory in a 6-2 triumph Saturday. Tanner Townsend (Sr., London, Ky.) led the Toppers, batting .500 with two home runs and six RBI in the five games.
Murray State heads into the contest on a four-game winning streak, including a 7-5 win over BGSU March 10. The Thoroughbreds followed with an 11-2 win over Southern Indiana, before claiming both ends of a doubleheader with Bethel (Tenn.), 13-4, 6-1. Tuesday's contest will be the seventh straight home game for MSU.
The two teams met once last season, with WKU earning its 11th straight victory over the Thoroughbreds, 8-4. MSU's last win over Western was an 8-6 victory on April 10, 1980.
Murray State leads the all-time series, 63-58-1.
