Bowling Green, Ky. - Jason Thompson scored two goals and Abraham Martinez added a goal and an assist to lead Eastern Illinois past the Western Kentucky men's soccer team 5-1 Friday night at the WKU Soccer Complex. The game was the conference opener for the Hilltoppers (6-4-1, 0-1).
Eastern Illinois (5-5, 1-1)) surged to an early lead when Jimmy Klatter scored off a pass from Ryan Luckett at the 10:13 mark of the first half. The Hilltopper's Jason Dugas tied the game forty seconds later when he scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Justin Goodman assisted on the score. Eastern Illinois then ran off three unanswered goals to steal momentum away from the Hilltoppers. Justin Thompson scored the first two goals in the 18th and 39th minutes respectivley and Martinez added a goal in the 43rd minute to give the Panthers a 4-1 edge at halftime. Eastern outshot the Hilltoppers 10-9 in the period.
The second half saw no scoring action until the 83rd minute when Eastern Illinois's Brian Carrol scored off a pass from Lee Burke to complete the scoring for the game. For the contest, each team managed 15 shots apiece. Ryan Eames picked up the victory in goal for the Panthers while Daryl Satler (6-4-1) suffered the defeat.
Western continues conference play Sunday afternoon at home against Bradley. Match time is set for 1:00 p.m. (CDT).
