Lexington, Ky. - The Western Kentucky track and field teams competed in the Kentucky Invitational January 11-12. This was the teams' first meet since the MTSU Christmas Invitational on December 8. Competition was stiff with schools such as Auburn, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Ole Miss, and Tennessee making the trip to Lexington.
WKU assistant coach Michelle Murphy Scott ran the women's 3,000-meter race unattached and was the top finisher in a time of 10:02.07. Bonita Paul (So., Capetown, South Africa) was the top collegiate finisher in the race with a time of 10:26.00. The Lady Topper distance medley relay team finished second in a time of 12:16.55. Jill Shannon (Fr., Jordantown, Northern Ireland) finished fourth in the women's mile run in a time of 5:08.31.
Highlights for the men included a first-place finish among collegiate runners in the men's 3,000-meter race for David Altmaier (So., Somerset, Ky.). Eigo Siimu (Fr., Viljandi, Estonia) had a leap of 6-6 in the high jump, good enough for second place. Raigo Toompuu (Fr., Haapsalu, Estonia) finished fourth in the shot put with a toss of 50-2.5.
The men and women return to Murfreesboro, Tenn., next Saturday (Jan. 19) to compete in the MTSU Invitational.
