Bowling Green, Ky. - One week after completing a three-match sweep of Canadian teams in its preseason tour, the WKU men's soccer squad will scrimmage at 6 p.m. (CDT), Saturday, at Greenwood Crossing, located at the intersection of I-65 and Scottsville Road in Bowling Green.
The match will feature a Hilltopper squad that outscored the opposition in Canada, 14-0. The defense was led by junior goalkeeper Ryan Lossie (Owensboro, Ky.) and redshirt freshman goalkeeper Daryl Sattler (Cordova, Tenn.) who each recorded one and a half shutouts during the tour.
The Hilltopper offense is led by senior forward Steven Brown (Bowling Green, Ky.) who scored five goals in Canada. Western also features twin brothers, seniors Scott and Steve Gardner (Louisville, Ky.) who have played and started every match of their career at WKU.
Also on Friday, WKU head coach David Holmes announced the 2000 Hilltopper schedule.
It features 11 matches against the much improved Missouri Valley Conference. The MVC has added Belmont, Southern Methodist, Tulsa, and Texas Christian to the fray this season.
The Hilltoppers make their first trip to the West Coast in four seasons on Labor Day weekend as they face Fresno State and national power Stanford in the Nike Goal Rush Classic at Fresno, Calif.
Western will also face regional rivals Memphis and Kentucky on the road throughout the season.
In the preseason coaches poll released Thursday afternoon, The Hilltoppers were picked to finish eighth in the conference after finishing third and advancing to the MVC Tournament the past two seasons.
Western will face IUPUI in a preseason exhibition August 25 at 7 p.m. (CDT). Due to continuing construction at the WKU Soccer Complex, the match site will be announced at a later date.
WKU opens its regular season home slate on Sept. 8, against UC-Santa Barbara at the WKU Soccer Complex, located on Creason St. beside the WKU Softball Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (CDT).
