Bowling Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky baseball team fell to Illinois State Sunday, 10-5, and losing the series to the Redbirds. WKU has now lost two straight games.
The Redbirds (3-6) got things going early, scoring five runs in the first inning off Hilltopper starter, junior RHP Brian Houdek. Houdek (1-2)went 4.2 innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits to take the loss for the Hilltoppers (7-7).
The Hilltoppers did get good performances from junior 3B Justin Herrguth and junior RF Tim Cleland in the game. Herrguth went 4-for-5 and knocked in one RBI. Cleland went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Senior C Kevin Clutter hit the Hilltoppers' third home run of the season in the fifth inning, a two-run shot.
Neil Cotts took the win for the Redbirds. Cotts is 1-1 on the season. ISU Preseason All-American C Ryan Duncheon hit his fourth home run of the series, the 51st of his career at ISU.
Junior RHP Kevin Sadowski made his first appearance for the Hilltoppers in the ninth inning. Sadowski struck out two and only faced three batters in the inning. It was his first appearance since April 15, 1999 when he had season-ending shoulder surgery.
The Hilltoppers will now prepare for Yale on Tuesday. Gametime is 2 p.m. at Nick Denes Field.
