BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Western Kentucky University volleyball student-athlete Jenni Miller (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider HS) earned the 1999-2000 Sun Belt Conference Sportsmanship Award, the conference announced at its Honors Dinner Tuesday evening at the Sandestin Beach Resort in Sandestin, Fla.
Miller is the first Western Kentucky athlete to receive the Sun Belt Sportsmanship Award, which honors a male and female student-athlete who exemplify leadership, citizenship, sportsmanship and academic integrity. Each institution may select a male and female nominee and the league's senior woman administrators vote for the overall recipients. Ty Church, a men's basketball student-athlete from the University of Denver, was chosen to receive the other SBC Sportsmanship Award.
"We are proud to have such dedicated student-athletes representing our institutions," Sun Belt Commissioner Wright Waters said. "These young people are making a difference not only in their respective sports, but also on their campuses and in their communities. They have a lot to be proud of."
Miller, a four-year letterwinner as a setter for the Lady Toppers, completed her playing career as one of only four players in conference history to eclipse the 4,000-assist mark. She is WKU's all-time assist leader with 4,521 handouts, and she holds single-season records for total assists and assists per game.
In addition, Miller was president of Western's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee this year and has been named to the SBC Academic Honor Roll in each of her four years on the Hill. She is also involved with numerous extracurricular activities, including Special Olympics and Toys for Tots.
