New Orleans, La. - The Western Kentucky Lady Topper Volleyball team was defeated by the University of New Orleans by a score of 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Friday evening at the LakeFront Arena on the campus of the University of New Orleans. The defeat sends the Lady Topper record to 25-8 overall. The match scores were 12-15, 9-15, 10-15.
The Lady Toppers jumped out to an early lead in game one behind the serving of Beaven Hill (Louisville, Ky.) before the Privateers kicked into high gear and never looked back.
Leading for the Lady Toppers was Tara Thomas (Louisville, Ky.) who finished the match with 14 kills. Natalie Furry (Normal, Ill.) finished the match with 12 kills while teammate Jessica Willard (Louisville, Ky.) had 13 kills on the day.
The Hilltoppers struggled to get anything going as they hit .210 for the match including .103 in the second game of the match.
The Lady Toppers made a run in the third game of the match, but UNO took control of the match after it was tied at eight all.
"Tonight, New Orleans just was better than us," head coach Travis Hudson said. "I refuse to let what happened tonight overshadow the great season that we had. I thought we played well and were ready to play, but it just was not in the cards for us to win tonight for whatever reason."
UNO will go on to face the winner of the Denver/Middle Tennessee matchup later this evening at the LakeFront Arena.
