Bowling Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky soccer team defeated Eastern Illinois 4-0 on Friday night at the WKU Soccer Complex. The win moves the Hilltoppers to 8-9 overall and 6-3 in the MVC.
WKU got off to an early start when Steve Brown (Bowling Green, Ky.) scored in the match's 31st minute. Brown added his second goal on a free kick just before halftime to make the score 2-0.
The Hilltoppers continued the pressure in the second half when senior Donovan Schultz (Johannesburg, South Africa) took a couple of passes from Brown and Derek O'Brien (St. Louis, Mo.) to net a goal in the match's 62nd minute.
WKU scored their final goal in the 69th minute off a short pass from Tawanda Chitapa (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) and Brown when O'Brien made the score 4-0.
"Tonight's score was very complimentary to our team," head coach David Holmes said. "Eastern Illinois is very fit, and we had to play well to take this match. Our players have quite a challenge now on Sunday against Bradley, but our players are ready."
Sunday is Senior Day on the WKU campus. The Hilltoppers will honor Brown, Schultz, O'Brien and Scott Gardner (Louisville, Ky.) before the match. WKU will face No. 11 Bradley on Sunday at the WKU Soccer Complex at 2 p.m. (CST). WKU will be playing for home field advantage in the first round of the MVC Tournament next weekend.
