Interviews: DL Coach Lindsey | DB Farris
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Football concluded practice on Wednesday afternoon, gearing up for the first home game at Houchens-Smith Stadium this Saturday, September 8 against Maine at 6:30 p.m.
Afterward, defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey and senior defensive back DeAndre Farris talked about how the defense performed in the first game of the season, in which the Hilltoppers fell at No. 4 Wisconsin by a score of 34-3.
"We need to continue to rush and when we get those opportunities make the most of them," Lindsey said. "We played hard, were aggressive and did some good things."
WKU recorded three sacks against arguably the toughest offensive line they will face all season. It was only the fourth time since 2000 that the Badgers allowed three sacks against a non-conference opponent. In addition to the sacks, Drell Greene also recovered a fumble stripped by Ta'Corian Darden.
When asked about how he felt about the first game, Farris said: "We played relentless, with a lot of effort, we were running to the ball, we're not afraid of anybody. Our [defensive] motto is ten toes down."
Maine is coming off a 35-7 victory in its first game, defeating New Hampshire – the No. 7 team in FCS - with a. 203-yard rushing and 224-yard passing attack. The Black Bears had a 36-to-24 advantage in time of possession and gained 24 first downs compared to only nine for the Wildcats.
"They attack you all over the field, run and pass. We're facing a really good offensive football team," Lindsey said.
The WKU defense is looking to bounce back after giving up 491 total yards in Madison. But with leaders on the team like Farris, who was voted a team captain for the 2018 season, the Hilltoppers are moving forward with the right mindset.
"I've always felt like I have had leadership qualities," Farris said. "I want to push everybody to be the best player they can be, including myself."
