Interviews: LB Coach Crum | LB Whyte | S Key
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Football closed out practice on Wednesday evening, looking to keep the momentum going as the Hilltoppers return home to face Marshall this Saturday, Sept. 29, at 6:30 p.m. at Houchens-Smith Stadium.
The Thundering Herd has a 5-4 advantage in the all-time series, but WKU has gone 3-1 against their border rivals since joining Conference USA prior to the 2014 season. Although it has been a heated rivalry game for the two sides, linebacker Masai Whyte mentioned that the Hilltoppers are still taking a simple approach.
"We're just treating them as another opponent," he said. "This is just the next team on the schedule this week. That's all we're looking at."
Marshall is heading into Week 5 after a 37-20 loss to NC State last weekend, in which the Thundering Herd were outscored by the Wolfpack 20-7 in the second quarter.
This week in practice, the focus has been on Marshall's run game. The Thundering Herd's duo of running backs, Tyler King and Keion Davis, have combined for 240 yards on 66 carries through the first three games.
"We know they have two solid backs, so we're going to try and get to the ball," Whyte said. "Try to get downhill as fast as we can, try to wrap them up and make plays and create some turnovers."
The Hilltoppers, meanwhile, are coming off their first win of the season, a 28-20 victory at Ball State. Safety Devon Key talked about what it felt like to finally get that first win of the season after coming close the previous two weeks.
"It was a great feeling," he said. "Just coming together as a team and finally getting that first win and being able to celebrate in the locker room with the guys for the first time this season was amazing.
"We just have to keep the same energy going into this game and the rest of the season."
