HC Pawlowski Interview
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — WKU Baseball held on for a 6-5 victory in Game 2 of a fall scrimmage doubleheader against Louisville on Saturday afternoon. In all, the Hilltoppers and Cardinals played two six-inning games at Jim Patterson Stadium, with the hosts taking Game 1 by a score of 7-4.
On the second pitch of the day, outfielder Luke Brown hit a line-drive homerun over the right-field fence to give WKU an early 1-0 lead. Brown was named to the 2018 All-Freshman team in his debut season after leading all Conference USA hitters with a .415 batting average in 29 league games.
His long ball on Saturday was off a left-handed pitcher, which he hit at a .397 clip in 2018. Overall during the doubleheader, Brown went 3-for-4 and drew a walk. He also led the Hilltoppers with three runs scored and two stolen bases.
On the mound, senior Colby Taylor started Game 1 with two perfect innings. He set down all six Louisville hitters and struck out four. In 2018, Taylor ranked fifth on WKU with seven starts, including back-to-back scoreless efforts to begin his career on The Hill.
Returning senior pitchers Troy Newell (1.1 innings) and Jacob Green (one frame) spun scoreless appearances in relief, while rising juniors Kevin Lambert (2-for-5) and Ray Zuberer III (2-for-7) added multi-hit efforts. Each of the hitters scored a pair of runs and tallied an RBI.
After missing - and subsequently redshirting - most of their junior seasons with injury, Sam McElreath and Dillon Nelson each contributed a hit. The infielder McElreath went 1-for-3, while the outfielder Nelson had two RBI and drew a walk in a 1-for-4 performance.
As for the junior college newcomers, infielder Jack Wilson (3-for-4 with a walk), first baseman/outfielder Jake Sanford (2-for-4 with two RBI) and catcher Collin Hopkins (2-for-2 with a run scored) all had multi-hit games in their first time suiting up for the Red and White.
Lefties Jack Lambert and Dalton Shoemake combined for three scoreless innings in Game 2, while righty Reese Brewer got the final out of the win for the save. The transfer from Walters State CC (Ill.) needed only one pitch to induce a game-ending, 6-3 grounder with the potential game-tying run on third base.
