BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Following a nationwide search for the next Lady Topper Basketball play-by-play announcer, Hilltopper IMG Sports Marketing General Manager Chris Bloomfield has announced that Queens University broadcasting and multimedia assistant Brett Williams will fill the position beginning in the 2018-19 season.
Williams, a 2017 graduate of the University of South Carolina, spent the 2017-18 year at Queens in Charlotte, N.C., as the play-by-play commentator for all of the Division II school's programs while also serving as a contributor for the Queens athletic website. In addition, Williams also called select Big South Network broadcasts at UNC Asheville in 2017-18 and has called select series for the Sugar Land Skeeters, an independent minor league baseball team in Sugar Land, Texas, since the 2015 season.
While still a student at South Carolina, Williams earned valuable experience across a variety of different outlets, including a stint as the play-by-play man for Kershaw County football, basketball and baseball on WPUB-FM in Camden, S.C. Williams also worked directly with the university during the 2013-14 campaign, handling play-by-play duties for all home volleyball matches and 16 softball contests for the Gamecocks.
The founder of Capital City Sports Network, Williams served as the CEO of the live sportscasting outlet for Student Gamecock Television from September 2015 through May 2017. In the role, he served as the play-by-play announcer for South Carolina's club ice hockey team, growing average viewership from 75 listeners to more than 800 per broadcast over his two seasons.
Williams takes over the play-by-play role for a program that has repeated as C-USA Tournament champions in 2017 and 2018 and posted a 24-9 record last season. In 2018-19, the Lady Toppers will be led by first-year head coach Greg Collins, who previously served as the team's associate head coach for the last six years. WKU and Williams will make their regular season debut on Tuesday, Nov. 6, as the Lady Toppers welcome in-state rival and 2018 Final Four participant Louisville to E.A. Diddle Arena.
