NASHVILLE, Tenn. – No. 41 FIU proved to be tough competition for WKU on Sunday afternoon when the Panthers defeated the Lady Toppers 4-1. This was the final match of regular season Conference USA action for WKU.
As the doubles round began, freshman Moka Ito and sophomore Monica Malinen took to court one to face off against the No. 21 doubles pair in the nation. The Lady Topper duo took their second loss of the season, falling to a pair of Panthers 6-4. Seniors Elpida Malamou and Violetta Shatalova were defeated on court two 6-1 and FIU nabbed the doubles point.
Sophomore tandem Natalia De Ugarte and Cindy Oest left their doubles match unfinished at 5-4, advantage FIU.
Singles action began and De Ugarte picked up the first WKU victory of the day in her singles match, winning 6-3, 6-2. Malamou and Oest were both defeated by an FIU representative in straight sets. Shatalova was dealt a hard-fought match on court three and was ultimately defeated by a Panther in a second set tiebreaker.
No. 5 Andrea Lazaro led Ito when the Panthers clinched the overall match. Malinen also left her singles match unfinished as her competitor led in the second set.
WKU falls to 8-6 overall and 2-2 in C-USA action while No. 41 FIU moves to 12-2 overall and 5-0 conference play. The Lady Toppers will return to the court for the final time in the regular season on Saturday at Memphis.
