BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Spring football with spring weather – we hope – comes to a close on Saturday as WKU hosts its annual Red vs. White Spring Game at 2 p.m. inside Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.
It has been a spring of transition for the Hilltoppers under second-year head coach Mike Sanford. After making the program's fourth consecutive bowl trip, the Hilltoppers are searching for a new starter at quarterback with the departure of two-year starter Mike White, as well as consistency from its offensive line, depth at wide receiver, and scattered new starters throughout a youthful defense.
The program also welcomed two new coaches to The Hill this spring in offensive line coach TJ Woods and head strength coach Jason Veltkamp as well as promoting offensive graduate assistant Matt Mitchell to quarterbacks coach.
While the work will continue into the summer and fall ahead of an August 31 opener at Wisconsin, Saturday's spring game will be an opportunity for the quarterbacks to display their skillset as they will each lead teams.
On one side, senior Drew Eckels and sophomore Steven Duncan will command their offense while freshman Davis Shanley has the sole reigns of the other side. Scoring during the Red vs. White game will be dictated based on the quarterback under center, and defensive scores will count for the opposite team.
The team will run a full scrimmage on Saturday with the first half clock operating as normal while the second half will have a running clock. At halftime of the spring game, WKU will welcome back seniors from last year's Cure Bowl team.
Parking and admission for the game is free. Gates open at Noon.
RED, WHITE, AND BREW 2018
In conjunction with the game, WKU's Alumni Association and Young Alumni Council will hold its annual Red, White, and Brew fest from 2 -5 p.m. across the street on south lawn, featuring craft beers and local wines. Event attendees will also have access to a special viewing area for the Red vs. White Game, and an event ticket includes access to vendors and a complimentary meal.
