BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Seventh seeded Lady Topper Tennis kicks off the 2018 Conference USA Championship by playing tenth seeded Louisiana Tech in the first round. The first serve is set to begin in Norfolk, Va., at 8 a.m. CT Thursday morning.
No. 10 LA Tech holds a regular season mark of 9-11, including a 1-4 record against C-USA opponents. The Lady Techsters and Lady Topper squads both defeated their only common opponents of the season, UTEP and Stetson. LA Tech enters the championship event on a three-match losing streak after being defeated by UTSA, Baylor and Rice, the latter two being ranked in the top-45 in the country.
No. 7 WKU looks to snap its four-match losing streak by picking up a win in the first round of the championship. The Lady Toppers hold an 8-7 regular season record and a 2-2 mark in conference play. Freshman Moka Ito and sophomore Monica Malinen continue to lead the team in doubles, while Ito is 11-1, currently playing in the leading spot for the Red and White.
The Lady Toppers lead the all-time series between the two programs 5-3. WKU and LA Tech have not faced each other since the 2001 Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
In 2017, No. 6 WKU notched its first ever win in a conference tournament defeating No. 11 Florida Atlantic in the first round. The Lady Toppers went on to upset No. 3 Marshall in the quarterfinals. WKU was led by Elpida Malamou who defeated a ranked opponent on court one. The Lady Toppers eventually fell to No. 2 FIU in the semifinals. LA Tech was also seeded 10th in the 2017 C-USA Championship when the Lady Techsters were defeated by No. 7 Charlotte in the first round.
