IRVING, Texas — WKU Golf made it a clean sweep Wednesday, as the Hilltoppers' Billy Tom Sargent and the Lady Toppers' Mary Joiner took home both of the Conference USA Golfer of the Week awards following a pair of victories.
Â
This is the second time Sargent and Joiner have won the honors in the same week. They also did it in the first week of the 2016-17 season after opening that campaign with individual wins.
Â
The award is the fourth of Joiner's career and her second straight. The sophomore was named C-USA Women's Co-Golfer of the Week last week after finishing third in the UNF Collegiate.
Â
This is the third weekly award for the redshirt junior Sargent, who last won it after taking the Kenny Perry Invitational title in October 2016.
Â
Joiner logged the third individual victory of her young career Tuesday at WKU's own Spring Break Shootout, firing a 4-under 212 total to help the Lady Toppers win the team title by 24 strokes.
Â
The Franklin, Ky., native won the individual crown by eight strokes over teammate Georgina Blackman. She played the par-4s and par-5s better than anyone across the tournament and notched a tournament-high 12 birdies.
Â
Joiner tied her career low for 54 holes at 212 – tying for the second-best score in program history – that she just set last week at UNF Collegiate. She now has five top-three performances in her career.
Â
Sargent used the best 54-hole score by a Hilltopper since 2009 to record the third tournament victory of his career last week at Houston's Border Olympics. He fired a 12-under 204, beating Campbell's Pontus Nyholm by two strokes, and finished ahead of two top-100 players, including one top-50 individual.
Â
Sargent's 204 beat his previous career low by two shots and is the best 54-hole score by a WKU player since Neil Horsley completed a 203 at the 2009 Renaissance Invitational. He finished 9 under on par-5s for the tournament and now has six rounds of 69 or better in his last nine opportunities.
Â
The Lady Toppers are back in action at Georgia State's John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate from March 25-27 in Atlanta, Ga.
Â
The WKU men are off until they compete in Lipscomb's Ryman Hospitality Intercollegiate on April 9-10 in Nashville.
