DELAND, Fla. – WKU defeated in-state foe EKU 5-2 in a neutral site match today at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. After losing the doubles point, the Lady Toppers rallied to win five of six singles matches and to claim the overall victory.
Action began as WKU took the court for three doubles matches. Regular partners freshman Moka Ito and sophomore Monica Malinen took the No. 1 spot for WKU as sophomores Natalia De Ugarte and Cindy Oest played on court two. Malinen and Ito were defeated for the very first time this season, falling 6-4. Seniors Violetta Shatalova and Elpida Malamou played on court three and fell to a Colonel tandem 7-5.
De Ugarte and Oest did not finish their match by the time EKU clinched the doubles point but were ahead 6-5 going into their final game.
WKU moved to singles play where the Lady Toppers made up ground after being down one point following the doubles matches. Ito, De Ugarte, and Oest all defeated their Colonel opponent in straight sets. Malamou was defeated by EKU in a well fought three set battle. Shatalova was victorious in her match after three sets, winning the second two.
Malinen won her match in three sets including the longest set of the season by any Lady Topper, 10-8.
EKU (5-8) holds a 10-6 edge in the all-time series between the two programs after WKU clinched today's win. The series dates back to 1974.
WKU (6-3, 2-0 C-USA) will play host Stetson tomorrow morning beginning at 9:00 a.m. CT and live stats can be followed here.
